MA Special Election January 19, 2010 to Replace Senator Kennedy

MA lawmakers will be holding a Special Election on January 19th, 2010 to replace Senator Edward Kennedy’s seat. Massachusetts is also working on legislation regarding designating a temporary replacement for the seat. Massachusetts lawmakers said on Monday they would hold a public hearing next month on whether to change a state law to let the governor name a temporary replacement to Senator Edward Kennedy’s seat, which would help Democrats keep their critical 60th vote in the chamber.

Massachusetts will not be fully represented in the United States Senate. There was no announcement about who may be replacing Senator Kennedy. Possible contenders include Kennedy’s widow Vicki Kennedy, nephew and former Rep. Joseph Kennedy, Attorney General Martha Coakley, and several members of the state’s congressional delegation.
